Essays on Physiognomy 1789 - Our Oldest Book

We have just found what is  our oldest book to date in a batch of books acquired a while ago. The edition of  “Essays on Physiognomy; for the Promotion of the Knowledge and the Love of Mankind written in the German Language by J.C.Lavater and translated into English by Thomas Holcroft llustrated by Three Hundred and Sixty Engravings” was published in 1789.  We have volume one only,

Physiognomy is the practice of assessing a person's character or personality from their outer appearance, especially the face.   The practice was well accepted by the ancient Greek philosophers, but fell into disrepute in the Middle Ages. It was then revived and popularised by Johann Caspar Lavater before falling from favour again in the late 19th century

Originally published in German, this edition is the first English translation of this work.  The edition includes dozens of illustrations of human faces and characters depicting the traits of individuals discussed in the work.

Unfortunately the cover of the book is in very poor condition and the spine is disintegrating:   the book needs to be rebound.  Also some of the latter pages have suffered insect damage.

Nevertheless this is a rare and fascinating book which could make an unusual Christmas present.  Please contact us if you are interested in the book or want to know more about it.
